The Philippines' first ever Olympic weightlifting champion, Hidilyn Diaz-Naranjo will be chasing her second consecutive Asian Games gold when she lines up for the 59kgs at the 2023 edition in Hangzhou, People’s Republic of China.
The last time the Tokyo 2020 gold medallist competed at the Asian Games in Jakarta in 2018, she competed for Philippines in the 55kg. But Diaz-Naranjo has since scaled up to the heavier division as the 55kg was dropped for Paris 2024.
She’s fresh from competing at the 2023 World Championships in Riyadh, where she finished seventh in the women’s 59kg with a total haul of 224kg behind China’s Luo Shifang.
The 32-year-old Filipino star is eyeing her fifth straight Olympic qualification after her debut at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
The top ten finish in her third of five-point earning International Weightlifting Federation tournaments, enhanced her chances to qualify for Paris. She now needs another top 10 placing at the 2024 Asian Championships in Tashkent in February and the IWF World Cup in April to confirm a quota spot for Paris.
The weightlifting competition at the Asian Games Hangzhou 2022 in 2023 is being held at Xiaoshan Sports Centre Gymnasium from September 30 to October 7.
Below is Hidilyn Diaz-Naranjo’s schedule at the Asian Games in Hangzhou.
