Andy Murray withdrew from the men's singles event at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships tennis grand slam due to a back injury, just hours before he was due to play in his first round match on Tuesday (2nd July).

"Unfortunately, despite working incredibly hard on his recovery since his operation just over a week ago, Andy has taken the very difficult decision not to play the singles this year," his team announced in a statement.

The two-time Wimbledon champion recently had surgery to remove a spinal cyst, and still hopes to compete in the men's doubles at the grass court slam, alongside brother Jamie.

Double gold medallist Andy Murray is due to make his fifth Olympic appearance at Paris 2024 after he was announced as part of Great Britain's squad. If fit, he could play in both singles and doubles on the clay courts of Roland-Garros.

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) is expected to confirm doubles line-ups by 25 June with the mixed doubles field not confirmed until the players arrive in Paris.
