Indian boxer Amit Panghal settled for the bronze medal at the Governor's Cup in St Petersburg, Russia, after going down in the 52kg semi-finals against reigning Olympic champion Shakhobidin Zoirov.

The current world No. 1 Amit Panghal, who beat Russia's Tamir Galanov in the first round, lost 5-0 to Uzbekistan’s Shakhobidin Zoirov in the final four.

Incidentally, Zoirov also beat Amit Panghal in the 2019 world championships final to claim his gold medal in the global event.

Both boxers have already qualified for the Tokyo Olympics and will be the top contenders in the 52kg division at the Summer Games.

Amit Panghal was the only Indian medallist at the Governor's Cup.

Vinod Tanwar lost to Russia's Igor Tsaregorodtsev by a 3-2 split verdict while Ashish Kumar, too, went down by an identical scoreline to another Russian pugilist, Nikita Kuzmin, in the first round.

Commonwealth Games bronze medallists Naman Tanwar and Mohammed Hussamuddin, meanwhile, lost to Kazakhstan's Aybek Oralbay and Uzbekistan's Miraziz Murzakhalilov by unanimous decisions in their respective opening bouts.

In other matches, Sumit Sangwan was bested by Uzbek boxer Dishod Ruzmetov, Varinder Singh lost to Kazakh Beknur Ozhanov and Manish Kaushik faltered against home favourite Gabil Mamedo. All three lost 5-0 in their first round bouts.
