Downhill World Cup leader Sofia Goggia is out for the rest of the season after a significant crash in training resulted in an injury to her right leg, the Italian Winter Sports Federation (FISI) announced in a statement on Monday (5 February)

Goggia, 31, fell during giant slalom during training on the Casola track in Ponte di Legno after she “straddled a gate with her right leg in a right-hand turn”.

After some initial speculation as to the extent of the injury, a second update from FISI confirmed that the Italian had fractured her tibia and tibial malleolus as a result of the crash.

The statement also indicated that the skier would be operated later in the day and will subsequently miss the rest of the season.

Goggia, who secured her first downhill win of the season in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee last month, is the latest alpine skier to sustain a serious injury this season.

Switzerland’s 2022 downhill Olympic champion Corinne Suter and Slovakian slalom Olympic gold medallist Petra Vlhova were both ruled out of action last month following knee injuries, while U.S. superstar Mikaela Shiffrin had to be airlifted off course after a heavy crash during the downhill race in Cortina d'Ampezzo.
