Alpine skiing FIS World Cup 2023/24: Federica Brignone wins Val-d’Isère super-G, DNF for Mikaela Shiffrin - Results
Olympic silver medallist Brignone was awarded for her aggressive run claiming her third World Cup victory of the season in Val-d’Isère. Shiffrin registered a DNF after missing a gate towards the end of the course on Sunday (17 December).
Italian speed skier Federica Brignone flew down the Val-d’Isère course in France to win the second super-G race of the FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup season on Sunday (17 December) for her fifth podium finish of this campaign.
Brignone shared the podium with downhill Olympic champion and compatriot Sofia Goggia, who posted the third-fastest run.
Some big names - including two-time Olympic gold medallist Mikaela Shiffrin, Lara Gut-Behrami, and Ester Ledecka - fell victim to tricky gates, skiing off the course and adding to a list of 26 athletes with DNF behind their names.
But Brignone had no problems in her speedy descent, clocking a winning time of one minute, 21.58 seconds (1:21.58). Norway’s Kajsa Vickhoff Lie finished second, 0.44s adrift, for a career-first podium place in the super-G on the World Cup circuit. Goggia followed in third place with a time of 1:22.17.
“Today was really hard to do the perfect run but every time that I was not really perfect I was trying to be ahead of time and push,” Brignone told FIS after the race. “The speed was there and some of the gates were really straight and sometimes you don’t want to push there. Today I was always pushing and ahead of time.
“Even if you are skiing well it is always difficult to be there and be there. This is the best present I can give myself for Christmas.”
Meanwhile, Shiffrin aimed for her fourth victory of the season, but the super-G proved to be her undoing for the second time in as many weeks. The USA skier enjoyed a streak of five podium finishes before she missed out on a medal in the season-opening super-G in St. Moritz.
She won a rare downhill victory in St. Moritz last weekend before skipping the event in Val-d’Isère on Saturday.
Shiffrin still leads the overall World Cup standings on 620 points with Brignone occupying second place 63 points behind her. Goggia leads the super-G standings with Brignone second for an Italian 1-2.
