FIS Alpine Ski World Cup 2023/24: Marco Odermatt seals super G crown as Stefan Rogentin wins in Saalbach

Soft snow conditions meant Odermatt finished off the podium, but with only challenger Vincent Kriechmayr faring worse, the Swiss added his third World Cup globe of the season.

Marco Odermatt remains on course to win four FIS Alpine Ski World Cup crystal globes in the 2023/24 season after clinching the men's super G title on Friday (22 March) at the World Cup Final in Saalbach, Austria.

The Swiss skier struggled on soft snow conditions in warm weather in Saalbach, and did not come close to challenging his Swiss teammates Stefan Rogentin, Loïc Meillard and Arnaud Boisset, who each started among the first six athletes on slightly firmer snow.

Rogentin (1:13.36), Meillard (1:13.39) and Boisset (1:13.51) were all well clear of the rest of the field, each of them posting fast splits throughout all sectors that no one else could match.

By the time Odermatt took to the Ulli Maier course, he already knew he had wrapped up the super G globe, after the only man who could have overtaken him – Austria's Vincent Kriechmayr, skiing immediately before Odermatt – failed to displace Rogentin at the top of the timesheets. Kriechmayr needed the full 100 points for the win and for Odermatt to finish 14th or lower in order to overtake his rival.

Kriechmayr failed to find the pace he needed in the slush, finishing 0.76 seconds behind Rogentin, before seeing Odermatt go faster to compound the disappointment.

Odermatt said to FIS TV after his globe was confirmed: "Rogie really deserved this first victory, Loïc as well and Arnaud his first podium. I watched them at the start, they skied amazing. I knew it would be very tough to ski as well as they did, but today I didn't need to."

The Swiss, who will go into Sunday's downhill final holding just a 42-point lead over France's Cyprien Sarrazin, added: "I had a really good feeling on the skis, for sure it wasn't that easy with the warm temperatures but for sure it gives me good confidence for Sunday."
