Alfiya Pathan named best women's boxer at 2021 Youth World Boxing Championships

Rising Indian heavyweight Alfiya Pathan was voted the best women's boxer at the 2021 Youth World Boxing Championships by fans.

The Nagpur boxer was among the eight Indian gold medallists at the 2021 Youth World Boxing Championships held in Poland. The Indian youth boxing contingent had topped the medal tally with a total of 11 medals, including three bronze, at the event which concluded on April 23.

The southpaw triumphed in the +81kg category after overcoming Moldova’s EUBC European Youth Champion Daria Kozorez 5-0 in a lopsided final. The Indian was aggressive right from the beginning and her punches rarely missed their mark Her opponent tried to launch a comeback in the final round, but in vain.

She has been a dominant figure at the national level as well. So much so, that her opposition had given her a walkover at the State Boxing Championship in 2019. Besides that, she had also clinched a gold medal in the 80kg category at the 1st Khelo India Games.

Pathan trains at the Sports Association of India (SAI) centre in Rohtak. She had previously won the gold medal at the Asian Junior Championship and also won gold at the Adriatic Pearl youth boxing tournament in February earlier this year.
