U.S. swimmer Ryan Murphy already had a pretty good day at the Olympic Games Paris 2024. He won bronze in the men’s 100m backstroke, making it his third Olympic medal at that distance. But then his wife shared a surprise that made him smile even more.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Murphy’s wife, who is expecting the couple’s first child, held up a sign that read, “It’s a girl!”

Murphy was married in September of 2023. Earlier this year, he told Olympics.com that his wife helped him see the bigger picture as he prepared for Paris.

“When you have to analyze swimming things at such a granular level and really be a perfectionist, it’s easy to turn that perfectionism in on yourself and start analyzing your own personality characteristics and stuff like that. Having her gives me a lot of great balance in my life. She’s someone who could say, ‘Hey, Ryan, you’re going a little bit too hard at this, you can be a little bit softer on yourself today’. She’s great for me and helps me keep a level head on things,” he said.

Murphy will be back in the pool to swim the men’s 200m backstroke on Wednesday, 31 July.
