48-year-old Oksana Chusovitina crashes out of Baku World Cup, one pathway to Paris 2024 remains
The Barcelona 1992 team gold medallist will need to compete in the all-around at the Asian Gymnastics Championships for a chance to earn a ninth trip to the Olympic Games.
There's just one chance left for 1992 Olympic gymnastics team gold medallist Oksana Chusovitina of Uzbekistan to earn her ninth trip to the Olympic Games.
After finishing 23rd in the vault qualification standings at the International Gymnastics Federation's Baku World Cup on Thursday (7 March), the 48-year-old has been mathematically eliminated from earning one of the two Paris 2024 quotas available on the apparatus.
Her scores in Azerbaijan were 12.226 for her first attempt and 11.900 for her second, giving her a final average of 12.083.
Chusovitina's final remaining qualification pathway to Paris 2024 comes at the home Asian Gymnastics Championships, scheduled for 24-26 May in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. There, she would need to rank highest among all-around athletes still eligible for an Olympic quota.
It'll be a tall task for the woman, who also owns a Beijing 2008 vault silver in addition to the team gold won with the Unified squad at Barcelona 1992. In recent years, Chusovitina has seldom competed on all four apparatus.
According to TheGymter.net, the Uzbek has competed in the all-around just once, at last year's Asian Championships, since the 2019 Worlds.
