13-year-old Australian Arisa Trew becomes first female skateboarder to land 720 trick invented by Tony Hawk

The Paris 2024 Olympic hopeful made history as she landed the trick involving two mid-air rotations in competition, becoming the first woman to do so since legendary skater Hawk created the move in 1985.

Australia's Arisa Trew made skateboarding history by becoming the first female to land a 720 while competing at Tony Hawk's Vert Alert in Salt Lake City, Utah on Sunday (25 June).

The trick – which sees the rider complete two full rotations while in the air – was first performed by Tony Hawk in 1985. No woman has ever managed to complete the manoeuvre in competition until the teen from the Gold Coast, who fittingly landed in front of Hawk watching the contest from the sidelines.

“I’m so excited to be the first girl to land a 720 in the world,” Trew wrote on Instagram after going on to win the women’s final. “I wouldn’t have been able to do it without the crowd hyping me up.”

Trew’s record-breaking comes as an exciting juncture for women’s park skating with qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games underway.

Most recently, at WST: Park Skateboarding San Juan 2023, the Australian finished in seventh place, placing her in 14th overall in the Olympic World Skateboarding Rankings.

Trew is set to make her return to the Olympic qualifying process later this year at the 2023 Skateboard Park World Championships in Rome, Italy from 1-8 October.
