Youth Olympic Games Opening Ceremony: How to watch tonight!

Find out when and where and how to watch the Buenos Aires 2018 party.

The Buenos Aires 2018 Opening Ceremony will be an Olympic celebration like no other.

The streets are set to burst into life with a display that will celebrate gender equality, inclusiveness and Argentina’s Latin spirit.

Here are all the details you need to follow the action in person or from overseas.

When and where

The ceremony will begin at 20:00 local time on October 6th.

For the first time in modern Olympic history the event will not take place in a stadium.

Instead the organisers are throwing an enormous street party!

The festivities will take place in downtown Buenos Aires at the famous Obelisk landmark.

How to watch

The opening ceremony will be streamed live on Olympic Channel.

The event is free and totally inclusive, with all members of the public welcome.

The shows will involve 2,000 people, including 350 performers, technicians and musicians from Argentine theatre company Fuerza Bruta.

More than half a million spectators are expected to line the Avenida 9 de Julio, with millions more following on TV and online.

What else to look out for

Buenos Aires 2018 will be the first Olympic event ever to feature equal numbers of male and female participants.

This equality will be reflected in the opening ceremony, where a man and a woman will light the cauldron together.

Also keep an eye out for the arrival of the 3,998 young athletes who will compete in the city’s venues over the following 12 days.

The innovative event is designed to capture the audiences’ imagination with displays that awaken the senses.

Once all 241 events in 32 sports have been completed, the Closing Ceremony will then be held on 18th October in the Youth Olympic Village.
