Biography

Werner Mattle was considered for the Swiss national alpine skiing team as early as 1969, but his breakthrough year in the giant slalom did not come until was 1972. In the span of one year he became Swiss champion, earned his sole World Cup victory, and captured a bronze medal at the Olympic Games behind his compatriot Edy Bruggmann. He disappeared from the international scene as quickly as he had arrived, however, earning a 10th-place finish in the giant slalom at the World Cup one month after the Olympics and then not appearing within the top-10 again until a third-place finish shortly prior to his 1975 retirement from active competition.
