Biography

Long-distance runner Walter Konrad came in 13th in the 10K at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games. Due to an Achilles tendon injury he did not qualify for the Roma Games. Konrad was born in Meran (South Tirol), lived in Austria from 1947-53, and won the 1953 Austrian title in the 5,000. He moved to West Germany in 1954, receiving German citizenship and claimed another five national titles at different distances. In 1955 he defeated Emil Zatopek in the 5K at an International Sports Meeting in Beograd.

As a technician Konrad worked in München from 1954-60 for Siemens & Halske and then went back to Italy where he took a job at EURATOM (Europäische Atomgemeinschaft), a European research institute.

Personal Best: 10000 – 29:32.2 (1956).
