Biography
Urpo KORHONEN
Besides his Olympic gold, Urpo Korhonen won two Finnish titles (in 1951 and1954, both in 3x10 km relay) and once placed second. His other accomplishments inskiing were winning the Boden marathon in 1951, winning the Porrassalmi race in1950 and two victories in Jämsänkoski. Besides skiing, Korhonen did also somedistance running. His best finish was fifth at the 1952 Finnish Championshipsover 10,000 m. He was also many times provincial champion in distances between 3,000 m and 10,000 m. After his sporting career, Korhonen worked as a forester and he also wrote war fiction novels. His most famous novels are Sissinä Rukajärvellä (As a Sissi soldier in Rukajärve, 1993), Sissiosasto. Partiotoimintaa Rukajärvellä (Sissi Squad. Patrolling in Rukajärve, 1995), and Ritaripartio. 14. Divisioonan kaukopartio. (Knight Patrol. 14th Division's Scouting Patrol, 1997). Urpo Korhonen's father was writer and editor Veikko Matias Korhonen.
