Biography

Suzy Chaffee made the US Ski team in 1965 and finished fifth in downhill at the 1966 World Championships. In 1966-67 she placed 10th in downhill in the World Cup, and 16th in the overall World Cup. Chaffee later popularized freestyle skiing, winning unofficial World Championships in that discipline in ballet from 1971-73. Chaffee was known for her looks and spent time as a model. In the United States she became known for her commercial for Chapstick lip balm, earning her the nickname, Suzy Chapstick. Chaffee later became an outspoken supporter of women in sports, and has also supported other causes. She served on the US Olympic Committee and was a member of the President’s Council on Physical Fitness under four Presidents. In 1996, with fellow Olympic skier Rosie Fortna, Chaffee co-founded the Native Voices Foundaton, which seeks to develop Olympic athletes from among Native Americans. Chaffee’s brother, Rick, also competed as an Alpine skier at the Winter Olympics.
