Biography

Stanislaw URBAN

Prior to winning a bronze medal in the coxed fours in Los Angeles, Stanisław Urban had participated in the 1928 Olympics in the eights. He also competed in the 1933 European Championships. In the coxed fours he was 1933 Polish Champion and runner-up in 1930. Additionally, he won four bronze medals at Polish Championships in the eights (1930-31), coxless fours (1929) and coxed pairs (1931).

From 1928-30 Urban was a leading rugby player for AZS Warsaw. At the beginning of World War II he fought as a lieutenant, before he was captured by the Soviets and sent to a prisoners’ camp in Kozielsku. He was among the 10,000 Polish officers who were murdered in 1940 by the Soviet secret police in the Katyn Massacre.
