Biography

Sharon Hanson was a heptathlete who placed ninth at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Hanson was a hurdler coming out of high school and ran the 400 hurdles at the 1988 Olympic Trials, but at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo she migrated to multi-events. Hanson won a silver medal at the 1991 Pan American Games. She placed third at the USA Nationals in 1989-90 and 1996. Hanson’s father worked in the oil industry and she took up track & field when she lived in Singapore as a youth. She later married an orthopaedic surgeon and they settled in a Virginia suburb of DC. Hanson served on the Athletes Advisory Committee for the Washington-Baltimore Regional 2012 Coalition which was formed to bid for the 2012 Olympics.
