Already a veteran of the BMX racing scene at age 28, Olympic silver medallist Alise Willoughby (under her maiden name Alise Post) appreciates her position as a role model but adds she still has more to give to the sport as she hopes to qualify for a third Olympic Games.

When Australia's Kai Sakakibara suffered serious injuries in a race crash in February 2020, it brought back memories of his own injury for BMX Olympic silver medallist Sam Willoughby and his wife Alise (Post). Now, with the 2020 cycling season suspended, Sakakibara's compatriot Sam and American two-time world champion Alise are trying to keep his spirits up by launching a fundraising campaign from their home in San Diego. Speaking exclusively to Olympic Channel, Alise also reflects on her second BMX world title in 2019, and what significance the postponed Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games holds for her.

How the Willoughbys are keeping Kai Sakakibara's spirits up

It was an accident that changed their lives, their relationship forever. A BMX training crash that paralysed the two-time World Champion and Olympic silver medallist Sam Willoughby in 2016.

His partner Alise Post also had Olympic silver to her name, but "struggled with going back into the sport" as she helped Sam through the dark times.

Walking her down the aisle became his inspiration.

Now married, the roles have reversed. Sam is using his love of competition as a drive in helping his wife as her coach.

The couple shared their emotional story with Olympic Channel at the start the new BMX Supercross World Cup season.
