Biography

One of the top foil fencers of his era, Salvatore Sanzo never managed to win the Olympic gold, narrowly missing out on his three attempts: fifth in 2000, silver in 2004 and bronze in 2008. He was more successful in World Championships, winning the title in 2001 and 2005, and in the European Championships, claming gold in 1999 and 2000. Additionally, he won the 2004 World Cup. Sanzo did bring home an Olympic gold medal in 2004, as a part of the victorious Italian team that narrowly defeated China in the final. Manzo was also a part in the victories of the Italian team at the 2003 and 2008 World Championships and 2005 and 2008 World Championships. A law graduate, he sat on the athletes commission of the International Fencing Federation (FEI) for five years. In 2009, he was made a provincial councillor in charge of Tourism, Sport and Youth in the province of Pisa, for the Partito Democratico of Pisa. A year later, he also became responsible for sports in all 10 provinces of Tuscany. Salvatore Sanzo is married to Frida Scarpa, herself a former foil fencer and World Champion with the Italian team in 2001.
