Merrell Gage served on the sculpture commission at the 1936 Olympics. He studied in New York and France, and later married the painter Marian Gage. Merrell Gage then became a professor of sculpture in Los Angeles. He worked as a sculptor – mainly in bronze, terracotta and wood – but also as an oil painter. Gage studied many stages of the life of US president Abraham Lincoln, even producing a short film about him.
