Biography

With Vladimir Yeshinov, Nikolay Ivanov from Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) formed the best Soviet rowing pair at the start of the 1970s. Together they won the coxed pairs gold (in 1974 with cox Aleksandr Lukyanov) and bronze (in 1970 with cox Vladimir Kostishin) at the World Championships and gold (in 1973) and bronze (in 1971, both with Lukyanov) at the European Championships. They also won the Soviet coxed pairs title in 1970-74. In 1975, Ivanov, Yeshinov and cox Lukyanov were joined by Aleksandr Klepikov and Aleksandr Sema and together won the Olympic coxed fours gold in 1976, World Championships coxed fours title in 1975 and Soviet coxed fours title in 1975, although in the Olympic final, Sema was replaced by Mikhail Kuznetsov. After finishing his sporting career, Ivanov worked as a rowing coach in his native St. Petersburg.
