As a youth, Nestruyev competed in track and field athletics, cross-country skiing and played football, before taking up shooting at the age of 13. He was selected to the Soviet National team in 1989 and won his first international title next year at the 1990 World Championships, where he won gold in the air pistol, team. Besides his 1990 World title, Nestruyev has won four more World titles (1998 in standard pistol, individual; 2002 in both air pistol, individual and team; and 2006 in center-fire pistol, team) and nine silvers at the World Championships. At the Olympic Games, Nestruyev has won gold in free pistol, and silver in air pistol, both in 2004. At the 2000 Sydney Olympics he was also fourth in air pistol.
