Biography

Martha Rockwell skied for Bennington College and the Putney Ski Club. She won multiple US cross-country titles from 1969-75, and in 1975 won five of six races in Europe and placed 10th that year in the World Cup. She was twice voted the top cross-country skier in the US, and the US female 5K champion now receives the Martha Rockwell Award. In 1986 Rockwell was inducted into the US Ski Hall of Fame. She later coached women’s skiing at Dartmouth. Rockwell and her partner, Laurie Levenger, a physical therapist she had met at Dartmouth, became one of the first gay couples to wed in Vermont, after gay civil unions were approved in March 2000.
