Biography

Larry Shields of Penn State won the IC4A mile in 1920 and 1922 and, in addition to his bronze medal in the Olympic 1,500 m, was a non-scoring member of the U.S. team that won the 3,000 m team race in Antwerp. In 1923 he began a 37-year-long career at Phillips Andover Academy as a biology teacher, coach, alumni director and member of the Board of Trustees. Shields took part in both World Wars rising to the rank of Commodore at the end of the war in the Pacific.

Personal Bests: 1500 – 4:03.0 (1920); Mile – 4:18.4 (1922).
