Mahdia was only 17 when she became a refugee in 2021. She was forced to flee her home country of Afghanistan in search of safety.
She showed early promise when she began practicing taekwondo at the age of 11 and became a member of the Afghanistan national team at the age of 15. She even experienced some success when she won the gold medal at the 2019 South Korean University Championships.
Mahdia now lives in Italy, where she is training with the Italian national team and volunteering with humanitarian foundations.
Having dreamed of becoming an Olympic athlete since childhood, her eyes are now firmly set on Paris 2024.
