Biography

In her early works Austrian painter Lilly Steiner focused on women’s and children’s portraits and the subject of motherhood. She was a well-respected painter and illustrator. Like many female artists of her generation Steiner was recognized only outside of Austria. In her case the international recognition came after moving to Paris with her husband Hugo Steiner in 1927.

Steiner then created numerous graphic portfolios and illustrations. Her expressionistic studies of conductors and artists like Alban Berg, Arturo Toscanini or Aristide Maillol were later considered among her best works. After 1937, Steiner represented in her works various ongoing political problems.
