Biography

József Mészáros competed first in the colors of Neptun EE, which was founded by his father Ferenc Mészáros. In 1909 and 1911, he won the national title in single sculls, defeating two excellent rowers of the age, Károly Levitzky and Ernő Killer.

At the 1912 Olympics, Mészáros won his quarter-final, but after the appeal of his Belgian opponent it was re-raced, where his opponent triumphed. According to some other sources, Mészáros himself filed a protest when his opponent came into his lane.

After World War I, Mészáros continued to compete and in 1921 won the national championship in double sculls. In the 1930s, he competed in the masters’ team for Neptun. After completing his sports career, Mészáros worked as a medical doctor and continued to serve his association as a team doctor.
