Biography

Indian artist K. S. Kulkarni studied at the School of Arts in Bombay. A prolific painter, Kulkarni used many different mediums, including sculpture, exploring all styles, especially Eastern and Western artistic traditions. He was innovative in combining abstract and figurative painting in a diverse way. In 1948 Kulkarni participated in the London Art Competitions and founded the Triveni Kala Sangam, where he served as Director of the Art Department until 1968. In 1955, he was awarded the first of his three national awards, and in 1958 he traveled through Mexico, Guatemala, Peru and Brazil. where he came into contact with the Mayan and Inca civilizations which had an important influence in his work.
