East German gymnast Kerstin Gerschau later married sprinter Klaus-Dieter Kurrat and they owned a fitness studio and a dance school, where she was responsible for choreography. Their three daughters also later became dance coaches in their school. Kerstin studied choreography at the Theater Academy in Leipzig and received a degree in physical education from the German College of Physical Education. Her father Helmut was a well-known national coach in gymnastics.
Gerschau won a bronze medal in the team all-around at the 1976 Montréal Olympics and finished ninth in the individual all-around. She did not qualify for any event finals. Gerschau won a silver medal on the floor and a bronze medal in the individual all-around at the 1973 European Championships behind Lyudmila Turishcheva and Olga Korbut. Domestically she won silver medals on the beam in 1974, and the floor exercise and uneven bars in 1976, adding a bronze medal in the vault that year.
