Biography

Kentaro Kawatsu’s father was a lecturer at the Hiroshima University and was known as the “Father of Hiroshima Sports.” In 1930, as a junior high school student, Kentaro set a national record for the 50 metre backstroke in 33.2 seconds. When he took the bronze medal in Los Angeles, he was a student at the Meiji University. In 1934 he competed in the 10th Far Eastern Games in Manila. At 55-years-old he committed suicide by immolating himself.
