Karl-Heinz Luck started his career at the age of 16. Eight years later he won the East German Championship in Nordic combined, and was world-ranked #1 for the next two years. He won the 1970 Holmenkollen, but placed sixth that year at the World Championships. Luck’s bronze medal in Sapporo was won even though he was only 17th after the jumping. Four years earlier he placed eleventh. Luck retired in 1973 and started a brief career as a coach. For a while he coached Nordic combined in Switzerland after German reunification.
