Biography

Kaarlo Mäkinen was one of the world’s top bantamweight wrestlers during the 1920s. Being equally strong in both styles of wrestling, he won most of his international awards in freestyle. In Greco-Roman, Mäkinen won silver and bronze at the 1921 and 1922 World Championships respectively, while in freestyle he captured Olympic gold in 1928 and silver in 1924. At the Finnish Championships Mäkinen won four titles: in 1921 and 1923 in Greco-Roman bantamweight, in 1923 in freestyle featherweight and in 1928 in freestyle bantamweight.
