Biography

Juho Halme was an active athlete while working as a sports journalist. He competed for several different Finnish clubs, including Lisalmen Visa, Helsinki Brisk, and Helsingin Kisa-Veikkoja. Between 1907-17 Halme won six Finnish Championships, in the long jump, triple jump, javelin throw, and pentathlon. In 1913 he became the second Finn to throw the javelin over 60 metres.

During the Finnish Winter War, on 1 February 1918, Halme was executed on the steps of St. Nicholas’s Church (now Helsinki Cathedral) by Finnish Red Guards and the Bolsheviks.
