Biography

German boxer Josef Miner won the bronze medal in the featherweight division at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. He lost his semi-final bout to South African Charles Catterall and then beat Hungarian Dezső Frigyes in the bronze medal contest. As the leading European in this tournament he also became European Champion.

He won his first German Championship at bantamweight in 1934 and in 1935 was second in the featherweight division, losing to the non-Olympian Arthur Büttner. In 1936, Miner won his second German title, and thus qualified for the Olympics. In 1937 he defended his title but one year later was beaten in the final by Büttner. Miner was killed in action in 1944 during World War II.
