Biography

José Dávalos began welterweight boxing at the national level in 1944 and won 15 Mexican championships over a career that lasted nearly two and a half decades. Internationally, he scored a major podium finish at the 1951 Pan American Games by placing third. He then represented his nation at the 1952 Summer Olympics, where he was victorious over Vicente Tuñacao of the Philippines in the opening round, but then had the bad luck to be drawn against Poland’s Zygmunt Chychła in round two, who had been undefeated since 1948 and would go on to capture the gold medal. Dávalos continued competing for many years thereafter and was successful enough to participate at the 1955 Pan American Games, although he did not win a medal. His final appearance at the national championships came in 1966. He also competed at the national level in volleyball and basketball.
