John Francis DAVIES

The highlight of John “Jack” Davies’ short ice hockey career was the 1952 Winter Olympics when, having been a member of the Edmonton Mercurys since 1949, he was selected as part of the team representing Canada in the sport at the games. A defenseman, he played in eight matches and scored four goals, helping Team Canada take home a hockey gold medal for the last time for half a century. Prior to the Olympics he had spent two seasons in the Edmonton Junior Hockey League with the Edmonton Caps and the Edmonton Southsides. He headed to the World Championships during the 1949-1950 season and took home a gold medal with the Mercurys, and retired from active play following the Olympics. Although he attended several reunion and memorial events for the 1952 victory, he remained a private person overall and died in January of 2009. As a member of his Olympic team, he was inducted into the Alberta Sport Hall of Fame Museum in 1968.
