The biggest cheers came after the biggest losses at Teahupo’o on today, August 1, as hot favourites were eliminated from the Paris 2024 surfing competition.

Carissa Moore lost to Johanne Defay in the quarterfinals, whom she congratulated before returning to the beach to announce she was stepping back from competitive surfing. As she graciously did interviews and press photos, she slowly started to break down, overwhelmed and exhausted from the emotions. I captured her here when she was greeted by her husband, Luke, a surreal moment of a world champion and gold medal Olympian showing her most vulnerable self.
