Biography

Dutch sculptor Jan Kriege was the son of a clog producer and took over his father’s company at the age of 15. Ten years later he started an education as a goldsmith and also learned drawing, beating and floating, assembling and embossing. He did a lot of commission work, often for Catholic churches, and also produced the plaque of the post office in Hilversum. During the German occupation in World War II Kriege had difficulty working, as he refused to join the Chamber of Culture, giving him little material submitted by them.
