Biography

Croatian Ivo Lipanović spent his youth during World War II helping repair the damage that was wrought by the conflict, but he was nonetheless able to have his first year as a junior rower immediately after the war in 1945. Given the circumstances, however, he had limited opportunities to train for the 1948 London Olympics, where he competed in the coxless fours, representing Yugoslavia. There, he was eliminated in the round one repêchage alongside Klement Alujević, Mate Mojtić, and Petar Ozretić. Lipanović continued rowing through 1956, but never attended another edition of the Games, although he did win national championships in 1950 and 1951. He later worked on a tuna fishing boat. At the time of his death, he was the oldest living Croatian Olympian, as well as the last Croatian to have represented Yugoslavia at the 1948 London Games.
