Biography

Ignacio URDANGARIN

His mother-in-law was a substitute on the Greek sailing team for 1960 as (then) Princess Sofia of Greece and Denmark. Urdangarín was at one time titled The Most Excellent the Duke of Palma de Mallorca, but that was removed by Royal Decree in June 2015 after a scandal. His wife, Cristina, Princess de Borbón, also lost her title as the Duchess of Palma de Mallorca, but retained her title as Princess. After nearly seven years, the famous "Nóos case" involving political scandal, embezzlement and money laundering, resulted in Urdangarín receiving a prison sentence along with others, including the former Balearic President Jaume Matas, in February 2017. For his part, Urdangarín received a six years and three months sentence, whilst his wife Cristina was absolved of all charges brought against her. After more than a year of appeals, a judge in Palma reduced Urdangarín's sentence to five years and 10 months in June 2018, and confirmed he had to be incarcerated within five days.
