Biography

Smulders captained his yacht Mascotte, which he entered in the 3-10 ton sailing class at the 1900 Olympics. This makes him (and his crew), the first Dutchman to compete at the Olympics. He placed second in the first race in that class, also becoming the first Dutch Olympic medallists, although no actual medals were awarded. Smulders was director in the shipyard and machine factory A.F. Smulders, founded by his father. It was later renamed Werf Gusto. Smulders was still in a high position in the company when he died while in France, at age 70.
