Biography

Hector CHOTTEAU

Hector Chotteau was the goalkeeper of the Belgian ice hockey team at the 1928 Winter Olympics, where he played three games. He was already a member of the team at the 1924 tournament in Chamonix, but did not play. Chotteau also appeared at five separately held European Championships (1924-29) and the World Championships in 1930 and 1931. At the 1927 European Championship he won a silver medal and then was chosen for the European All-Star Team against Team Canada. In 1935, he left his home club CPA and joined Étoile du Nord in Bruxelles. Chotteau is reputed to have been the first goaltender in Europe to wear a mask, doing so during a game against CSH Paris in 1925. He was a top speed skater as a youth, winning the Belgian junior speed skating championships in 1913, and was a good field hockey player. Chotteau served as a referee both when he was active as a player and after he retired.
