Biography

Gustaf Adolf Boltenstern Jr. took part in four Olympic Games from 1932-56, missing 1936, and won a medal every time. In individual dressage, he won a bronze medal in 1948, winning team gold medals in 1952 and 1956. In 1948 the Swedish team only lost the gold medal due to the disqualification of his teammate Gehnäll Persson, who was not a legitimate military officer in 1948, as required. Boltenstern won his only individual medal with the horse Trumf, but his two gold medals came with the gelding Krest. In 1956 Boltenstern was the Swedish flag-bearer at the Opening Ceremony at the Stockholm Equestrian Games. He was descended from a German-Swedish noble lineage originally from Pomerania under the name Bolte, ennobled in Sweden in 1675 as Boltenstern.
