Middle-distance runner Günther Steines, brother of Bert Steines, came in sixth at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics in the 800 m and won a bronze medal in the 4x400 relay. Günther Steines was also German Champion in the 800 in 1950 and 1952, and with the 4x400 relay in 1950 and 1954, also winning indoors in 1940 in the 4x3 lap relay. In 1952 he was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf. Steines studied mathematics, physics and sports and became a teacher at a high school in Ahrweiler, where he eventually became Director of Studies.
