Gunther Rodehau reached the hammer throw final at the 1988 Seoul Olympics but placed 12th and last in the final. At the World Championships he was fifth in 1983 and ninth in 1987. In 1985, he was runner-up at the World Cup and he finished third at the 1983 European Cup. He also placed fourth at the European Championships both in 1986 and 1990. In 1986 and 1990 Rodehau won East German titles. In 1984, he set his only world record, indoors with 71.74.
Shortly after German reunification Rodehau retired and started a job at a car dealing company. Many documents on doping in the former GDR became public after reunification, and his name was found in the list of doped athletes.
