Swimmer Gisela Weiß won a bronze medal at the 1960 Roma Summer Games with the 4x100 freestyle Unified German relay team. She also participated in the 400 freestyle event, but failed to reach the final. In 1961 she won the East German national title in the 400 freestyle. From 1959-61 she won six relay titles with her home club SC DHfK Leipzig, in both the 4x100 freestyle and the 4x100 medley.
Weiß, whose father was killed in action during World War II, later studied medicine and became a doctor. She married non-Olympian swimmer Karl-Heinz Engelhardt. Until German reunification, Weiß worked as a sports doctor at the Children’s and Youth Sport School in Leipzig, and after reunification worked in a rehabilitation clinic.
