Biography

Speed skater Gerd Zimmermann competed for the mixed German team at the 1964 Innsbruck Winter Games. He placed 29th in the 1,500 m, 13th in the 5,000 m, and seventh in the 10,000 metres. At the 1968 Grenoble Olympics he finished 19th in the 500 m, now representing West Germany. In 1972, at Sapporo, he placed 21st in the 500 m, 12th in the 1,500 m, ninth in the 5,000 m, and eighth in the 10,000 metres. In his career he set 36 West German records and earned eight West German titles in all-around (1964-67, 1969-72).

Zimmermann married his teammate Hildegard Sellhuber, and turned to sports administration after his active career. He became president of the (West) German Speed Skating Association from 1985-2005, and vice-president of the International Skating Union ISU beginning in 1994.

Personal Bests: 500 – 39.7 (1972); 1000 – 1:20.5 (1972); 1500 – 2:03.3 (1972); 5000 – 7:21.6 (1969); 10000 – 15:23.3 (1969).
