Biography

Discus thrower Gerhard Hilbrecht did not qualify for the final at the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games. He earned one gold and two silver medals in the discus and the pentathlon at the 1935 and 1937 University Games, and was German discus champion in 1943, 1946 and 1949 and had several runner-ups. Hilbrecht was a very versatile athlete, also active as a sprinter (100 to 400 m), hurdler, high jumper, pole vaulter, long and triple jumper, shot putter, hammer and javelin thrower. In 1951 he was awarded the Team Silver Bay Leaf. His daughter Julia later became a successful high jumper. Hilbrecht was employed as a teacher by the German School at Athens.
