Biography

Buddy Friedrichs attended Tulane and sailed for the Southern Yacht Club in his native New Orleans. He won his first Southern Yacht Club competition in 1964 and was North American champion in the Dragon class from 1965-67, Canadian champion in 1965, European Champion in 1966, and World Champion in 1967, winning the King Constantine Trophy for the Dragon Class in Toronto. He won a fourth North American Dragon title in 1970, after his Olympic appearance. In 1964 Friedrichs won the Clifford Mallory Trophy, given to the top sailor in the United States.

His career was in investment banking, with Howard, Weil, Labouisse, Friedrichs, Inc., a firm his father had founded. Friedrichs was a member of the Southern and New York Yacht Clubs, the Tulane T Club, was on the board of the Green Wave Club, and was elected a member of the Tulane Sports Hall of Fame.
