Biography

George GARBUTT

Forward George “Tic” Garbutt attended the University of Manitoba and played on their ice hockey team until his graduation. He then joined the University of Manitoba Graduates and took home a gold medal with them at the 1931 World Ice Hockey Championships. This made him the first Canadian Olympic hockey player to have previously won a World Championship medal when he was selected to represent Canada the 1932 Winter Games. A member of the Winnipeg Hockey Club his team had won the Allan Cup in 1931, given annually to the amateur Canadian senior men’s ice hockey champions, before being selected to play at the Olympics. He only played in one game, however, but he did score a goal and celebrated his team’s gold medal victory that year. He was inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame in 2004 as a member of the 1931 Winnipegs.
